Water Resources

Sheladia’s projects in irrigation and water resources stress aspects of irrigation infrastructure development from the main canal level to the tertiary level, command area and watercourse development, participatory irrigation, and institutional strengthening through capacity building of government institutions and water user associations (WUAs). We provide assistance to governments to strengthen Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), develop river basin planning models, institutional strengthening, engineering design, monitoring & evaluation, development of surface and groundwater resources, creation and implementation of regulatory bodies, and environmental and social assessments. We have undertaken major irrigation reform projects through participatory approaches, including system handover, system initiation, and rehabilitation or upgrading in Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in Asia and Cape Verde, Egypt, Mali, Niger, and Senegal in Africa. Activities to create sustainable WUAs have focused on capacity building activities for participatory O&M, asset management, agricultural extension and marketing through the involvement and strengthening of local government agencies and community-based organizations and the development and promotion of women’s groups. Current or recent projects include the ongoing 7-year $90 million Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded Western Basins Water Resources Project in Afghanistan, the $400 million World Bank-funded Orissa Water Resources Consolidation Project in India, the World Bank project in Nepal for Irrigation Water Resources Management and Transfer, the World Bank project in Uzbekistan for Monitoring & Evaluation of the Ferghana Valley Water Resources Management Project, and the World Bank project for the M&E of the Maharashtra Water Sector Improvement Project in India.
